Salina, patrimony of the humanity
Salina

The breathtaking and beautiful island of Salina takes its name from “saline” because of the salty deposits that are found in and around the island. Its more ancient name was Didyme (mountains twins) deriving from its twin volcanic peaks: Mountain Porri (870 meters high) and the mountain Fossa delle Felci (969 meters), the higher peak of the Aeolian Island.

With a diameter of nearly 27 km, the island is second in size only to Lipari.

Its territory is subdivided in three communes: Santa Marina, that includes the small village of Lingua, where much of the above-mentioned salt was found; Malfa, which includes the villages of Capo Faro, Capo Gramigniazzi and Pollara; and finally Leni, which is made up the hamlets of Valdichiesa and Rinella.

Most of the island is green and consists of an exceptional natural reserve.

The agriculture is mainly comprised of vineyards and capers; there is also alot of wild vegetation which makes up a large part of the island's natural beauty.

There are many species of birds, from the small nesting types, to birds of prey.

Forests and mountains are populated with many fauna such as wild rabbits. You might also come across on your hikes the harmless yet rare black eoliana lizard.

It is, therefore recommended to see this magnificent island by car, on foot, and by boat.

Exploring the crystal clear waters with its rocky backdrops and multi-colored fish, small inlets, hidden beaches of pebbles, and imposing walls overhanging the sea, will, simply put, take your breath away.
